Suzanne on Birchmount

I was alerted to this groovy Quebecois femme-pop LP recently by an old Paul Major radio broadcast that was circulating amongst some friends. The set closed out with two magical tracks from this obscure LP released on the Birchmount label with about half the songs penned by Greg Hambleton of A Passing Fancy. These two songs have been on constant rotation the past few weeks, and I hope will captivate your imagination as well. "Shendah" is a love song written to a horse, and is just totally heartbreaking - in only the way that it could be! "Island" is a ballad of teenage alienation couched in gushy organ fills and a subtle marching drum-beat. You could make a killer 7" out of these two! Check 'em out... and I'll see you next week.

  2. Hello and I would like to weigh in on this - the song is about me, I believe, as I grew up with the original penned score framed and hanging in my room for all of my childhood. Unfortunately I cannot find my copy of the original recording. As for the illegitimate child of Greg Hambleton - that is news to me. But then again, I am a child of the sixties! I believe my father to be someone entirely unrelated. If the relative who appears to know otherwise would like to contact me with any other information, feel free. I did have the occasion to thank Mr. Hambleton for his song when I was in my teens.

  3. Thankyou for filling us in, Shendah. It is a most lovely song, and while I now understand that it is about you - where do these lyrics come from: "You're Arabian, you can run like the wind..."

  4. Like many songs penned during that era, I'm sure the Arabian, running like the wind references are colourful imagry (it WAS the sixties afterall!)

  5. To the person who posted that Shendah is the illegitimate child of songwriter, please understand that she is not. Please do not spread lie that will hurt her. Thanks.
